Silent night, holy night
The 200-year anniversary of the most famous Christmas song
Did you know? "Silent night, holy night" is Austrian through and through - Joseph Mohr, a priest, came up with the words in 1816 and Franz Xaver Gruber, a teacher and organist, wrote the melody two years later in 1818. On Christmas Eve that year (that's when Christmas is generally celebrated in Austria), Silent night, holy night was performed for the first time.
Interesting is how it came about.
Before Christmas Eve in 1818, Joseph Mohr brought the words to Franz Xaver Gruber and asked him to compose a melody and guitar accompaniment for the Christmas Eve mass; a river flooding had damaged the church organ and the priest was desperate to celebrate the Christmas mass service in 'style'.
The song was liked, people joined in and so, only a few years later, singing families from the Zillertal valley carried the song from Austria into Europe and the rest of the world. Today, the song is performed in over 300 languages and dialects.
After its 'success' the melody was attributed to several of Austria's famous composers, such as Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven. In the mid 1990s a manuscript was found, proving the original story of Joseph Mohr and Franz Xaver Gruber.
The German lyrics The English lyrics
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Silent night, holy night,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht All is calm, all is bright
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar. Round yon virgin mother and child.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, Holy infant, so tender and mild,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Silent night, holy night,
Hirten erst kundgemacht Shepherds quake at the sight;
Durch der Engel Halleluja, Glories stream from heaven afar,
Tönt es laut von fern und nah: Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ, der Retter ist da! Christ the Savior is born,
Christ, der Retter ist da! Christ the Savior is born!
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht, Silent night, holy night,
Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht Son of God, love's pure light;
Lieb' aus deinem göttlichen Mund, Radiant beams from thy holy face
Da uns schlägt die rettende Stund'. With the dawn of redeeming grace,
