The 10-Day 'Classic' Walking Holiday
The 'Classic' Walking Holiday - our flagship tour
All Austrian Alps Active holidays combine authenticity, culture and history, immersion with the locals, alpine walking, 'nature sightseeing' and fine dining as well as traditional cuisine.
The 10-Day 'Classic' Walking Holidayis set for June and July every year. That time is perfect for alpine flowers to bloom in abundance, very nice temperatures to walk and hike in, the farmers will have just moved their cattle up 'to the alps' and the fresh, clean Spring feeling is in the air. (while it technically is summer in June, due to the altitude on 1500m more often than not we enjoy spring rather than summer temperatures).
Walking is an essential part (obviously) of our holiday, however it's not the defining part - for us it's not about eight hour hikes every day, moreso walking in our alpine areas is sightseeing at its' best and some of the real gems are only accessible via walking tracks (rather than cars). Besides, a walk or hike in such landscapes is exhilarating and rejuvenating and the lunch stops are the rewards.
While 30km daily hikes and sleeping in tents certainly is an experience, we prefer a bit of luxury. Based in a 4**** wellness resort, our guests enjoy a huge wellness area with steambath and sauna and relaxation areas, in- and outdoor pools and very fine dining.
Patrick, the principal host, is always very excited to share local stories about people and life in his home in Fontanella and Faschina. Whether it's a reflection on what life was like in an alpine village during WW II or the extreme conditions the Walser people found themselves in since they came over form Switzerland more than 700 years ago.
On our walks we'll learn - by watching, not by doing :) - how the farmers work the land (they're land conservationists) and how the run their farms with only 10 - 15 cows. We'll visit an alp and observe the cheesemaker produce the so well-known Austrian alpine cheese. And, of course, we experience how people 'live in harmony with nature' in a biosphere reserve.
Patrick's mother, Elisabeth, is the cultural queen of the valley. She introduces guests to 'tea that hasn't heard a car', made on the spot from freshly picked flowers. And then there is the German lesson - for many guests it's a journey back to their own school days.
After all that, guests have become friends and they say 'Auf Wiedersehen' (until we meet again) rather than good bye.
